Why are hurricanes mostly given a woman's name ?

The tail end of Bertha reached the garden around 11.00 this morning.     Nearly two inches of rain fell in two hours.
When I walked in the garden I was most surprised at how warm it felt.    Warm and damp, as though I was in the tropics.
 It really felt pleasant.
The weight of the rain has caused the plants to bow,
but I am sure they will right themselves when the sun shines.
We are fortunate that the hurricane lost it ferocity as it crossed the pond.

The weather will be unsettled for the next week..........I wonder if autumn will arrive early???

  1. Glad you escaped unscathed. It's been wet here this morning too and windy with it but I don't think we had 2 inches in a couple of hours. Hope the garden recovers and is glad of the water!

    1. It has left everything saturated which is a good thing. It has become very dry over this long hot summer. It will recover, the gardener will make sure of that :)

  2. I'm sure your plants will bounce back in no time. We've had lots of rain today but nowhere near as much as we had on Friday evening, there was flooding in our area, cars had got stuck in water up to their windows, yet everywhere was back to normal again yesterday.

    1. Gosh, that was a lot of rain. Our ditches that were empty now have quite a bit of water in them.....that will flow down to the river.
The weather seems so extreme these days.....I expect over the years it will get worse with climate change.

  3. We had a lot of rain today too and wind..... Your plants will recover soon when it's drying. Your garden looks lovely fresh, I think.

    1. It does look fresh Janneke, it is amazing what a deluge of water does to the garden :)

  4. Lucky you getting all that rain. Too bad it didn't come down over a couple of days so it would soak in. I have often pondered that question about why most hurricanes are named women's names. Hmmmm Your plants look mighty soggy.

We are rarely affected by hurricanes. Right now it is the cold fronts coming from the north that have kept it nice temperature wise and have given us a bit of rain.

Here it is a wet day yet no rain. We had heavy fog early this morning and it is still cloudy. It feels like it could rain at any moment. I doubt it rains. It is just so very humid.

    Enjoy your evening...

    1. I would have preferred it over a couple of days Lisa. The ditches are full of water now and it has topped up the ponds.
It I squeeze the plants they ooze water....so very wet.

Glad you are having cooler temperatures, makes it much easier to work in the garden.

  5. Hi Cheryl,

We had heavy rain in the early hours of the morning - loud enough to wake me and that never happens as the rain doesn't generally hit our bedroom windows - but I guess that can't have been the tail-end if you didn't get it until 11 as it apparently moved up the country from the south? It's sunny now and very windy though, but dark clouds are looming with probably frequent showers for the rest of the evening.

This morning was very hot though, but I had no choice but to wear a jacket when I went out to try to keep even slightly dry. In the end I was far too hot.

    1. We had heavy rain during the night but todays rain was torrential with hail thrown in....and it was so humid. I read that it is heading North today and Scotland will take the brunt of it ................who knows !!!

I have not been able to wear a jacket today....it is so humid.

      Have a good week Liz.

  6. An inch an hour is a heavy rain. Gentle is better but we have no control over that. Hope the next week brings more moderate weather for you so the garden plants can reach for the sun again.

    1. The rain was very heavy.....the problem is when it rains that hard most of it goes into the ditches and then into the river.

  7. Hi Cheryl
This morning the rain was torrential and really windy - there are leaves all over the place and loads of apples have been blown off the trees. But it calmed down by the afternoon a little. ~The garden definitely needed it but now all the flowers that are left look in a sorry state. You just can't win can you.

    Have a good week.

    1. Hi Elaine,
I must say today it feels as though autumn has arrived. Nights are really cool and days are pleasantly warm......
The garden is messy and really does need sorting.....in time.................summer with the Grand-children is more important :)

  8. I've often wondered, too, why hurricanes are given women's names; it must be a man in charge of naming them:) As Lisa said, we aren't usually affected by hurricanes being so far inland. It's been cloudy here for several days with the threat of rain constantly, but we haven't had anything more than a few sprinkles. I've actually had to water my containers which I haven't had to do often this summer. Love your third photo--I'd love to walk down that pathway!

    1. Rose, Too funny, and strangely I thought the same thing:) Must have been a man in charge of naming them.
It must be lovely not to have to water containers........that is all I seem to have done this year. I now realise I have far too many :(

      Have a good weekend.

  9. Hi Cheryl.
I think the forecasters overplayed Bertha's force slightly but our gardens are all the better for the rainfall and I'm sure everything will perk up when the sun shines.

You can view the names allocated each year for 'Atlantic Tropical Storms' here: http://geology.com/hurricanes/hurricane-names.shtml AND they are not all females!

    1. Hi Frank,
I think they always overplay the weather now......perhaps the Michael Fish incident has something to do with that :)

Tks for the link, I will take a peek.....

  10. The weather has been so strange the last few days, and like you, I noticed the humidity in the air. One day we had fierce sunshine in the morning, a cracking thunderstorm in the afternoon and a warm balmy evening!

That statue of the girl reading her book in your border is beautiful! I hope the plants bounce back after a dry spell, who knows, maybe summer will return.

    1. Hi Paula...........the weather is so changeable, I cannot keep up with it. It would appear the garden can't either.

Tku re statue......a gift from my husband when our Grand-daughter was born :)
