Blue skies.....blue blooms and the rookery.

Gardening at the weekend was unexpected.   A change in the weather was all that was needed.
Rooks have returned to the rookery at the bottom of the garden.
I watched them fly back and forth....the early morning sunlight catching their wings.
Rooks are noisy and messy.   Personally I love having them in the garden.......I love the antics while they raise their young.   I love the noise in the evening when they return to the rookery, calling to each other as they fly.     They are magical and mysterious birds.
Dwarf iris have opened today......they are such a welcome sight.
I do so love the pretty blue and yellow flowers.........have a problem with the sparrows pecking them to pieces at the moment.   I shall enjoy them while I can..........

  1. Hi Cheryl
How lovely you were able to get out in the garden. I love to hear the rooks and crows when they congregate. How lucky you are to have a rookery in the garden. How lovely is the colour of those Iris - mine are all leaves and no flower buds - I don't seem to be very successful even after many attempts. It has been a springlike day today absolutely gorgeous I went for my daily walk, well more of a saunter, really. Then got stuck in pruning my huge hardy fuschia it felt great just to be able to do some gardening. Enjoy the rest of the week.

    1. How strange Elaine......have the iris bloomed in previous years??

I love having the rookery in the garden. Not sure Mr P does though :))

Love hardy fuschia.....planted some myself last year, not sure they have survived. We will see.
      Have a good week.

  2. My spirits have been lifted high as the Rooks fly by these beautiful blue blooms. What treasures you have in your garden!! My irises haven't emerged from the soil yet. The poor little crocus and daffodil greenery is peeking but the snow that flies in my garden today won't encourage them any. Whoooo Hooo for blue.

  4. Pretty little iris. I have some but they often get overrun by larger plants. Mine aren't as pretty colored as yours. We have crows here, kin to your rooks. They aren't my favorite birds because they raid the nests of song birds and eat the babies. Crows are very useful scavengers and probably the smartest of the birds in our area. I once worked with a lady that was terrified of crows. I think she watched Alfred Hitchcocks "The Birds" and believed it:)

    1. Hi Rooks and Crows are not my favourite birds but I do find their behaviour fascinating.
There are plenty of fields around our home, so the Rooks are able to find plenty of food (leatherjackets)......also we get quite a lot of road kill (sadly) and of course the Rooks clear this.

I remember the film........my husband is frightened of birds so has never watched it :)

  5. It was lovely to see some blue skies over the last few days, back to grey again today though. How wonderful to watch the rooks raising their young at such close quarters, it's worth a bit of noise and mess to have the privilege I think. No irises out here yet but I don't think it will be long now.

    1. I love to watch the behaviour and habits of the Rooks.......I quite like the noisy birds as I wake in the morning. It is all part of living in the countryside. It is there home too !

I am sure your iris will soon burst into flower.......

Hope things are getting a little easier for you. x

  6. I'm glad you were able to get into the garden again, Cheryl. We had a beautiful weekend, too, but it's back to the cold once again. But I won't complain; that's normal for February for us. Love those blue, blue irises! I think I planted some last fall, so I can't wait to see some blooming here. I say "think," because I've forgotten what bulbs I planted last fall--I'll have lots of surprises this spring:)

    1. It is wet today Rose......cold drizzle and grey skies. Oh well........it would seem Winter is reluctant to let go.

That is the great thing about bulbs, isn't it? I never remember what I plant, so make sure these days that I write it in my notepad.......
      Enjoy your surprises Rose

  8. What a change from your last post it did look really cold in those photos, blue sky and sun dose wonders for the soul. We have a few Crows that will come into the garden, they like to dislodge the feeder so all the food falls on the ground...!

    1. Hi Amanda
The weather is all over the place............we have cold drizzle today and grey skies.

The Rooks do the same......they can be a nuisance but it is all part of the countryside.
I like to share the garden with all creatures, although they can sometimes be frustrating :)
